Formal Outfits For Game Designer Women
For my 8yr old - How do video game developers dress at work?
Next Friday is career day and this is his dream job but he's convinced he needs a suit. I'm guessing that most developers are not at work in suits and ties but I'm putting it to the experts.
(Sorry if this breaks any posting rules - I didn't interpret any of them to forbid this)

For me it's shorts and a t-shirt with a funny slogan or advertising a band/video game. Flip-flops on my feet.
Every single day, regardless of season.
I'm possibly r/malefashionadvice 's worst nightmare.

That is the exact outfit my idea of the stereotypical indie dev wears.

you've just described every software engineering recruiter that ever did

Yea, that's pretty much everyone at my work (providing there's no kilts). Girls usually wear the same thing. Jeans, Logo'd t-shirt, and flip-flops. Very rare to see a dress or skirt.
Even management is the same way. I think only our CFO wears suits actually.

Don't forget about the fur-lined crocs in the winter months!

I hope you're wearing socks with those flip-flops.

Maybe he needs a shark suit.

That one guy in the bottom left is watching Smash 4 instead of working. Such a slacker

Have a glimpse at the BioWare Montreal office and the people who work there (awesome, awesome, people, by the way).

I think Yannick, the studio director, wears suits, he's pretty much the only one.

When I interviewed at BioWare Edmonton in '99 I dressed up really sharp like I had been told by various advisers. I think I met Greg Z first. He was bare foot, wearing shorts and a t-shirt.
I was waaaaay over-dressed.
A few guys tried to instigate formal Fridays, but not very many people ever dressed up for that.
So no. Suit is generally not required.

I wear red t-shirt with white pixelated text stating "TEXTURE NOT FOUND"

Everyone dresses casually. Some studios have a "Fancy Friday" which is basically the opposite of "Casual Friday". So that can be fun if he wants to get dressed up. Not sure how common that is though.
Going to an interview in a suit for a game dev job, at least for a programmer/artist/designer position, makes it immediately obvious that the person applying is new to the industry. Not really a bad thing since that would come up in the interview anyways, but just something to note.
